Mentioning Paul by name
The author of 1 Clement mentions Paul twice by name:

Paul among the apostles:

Of citations and allusions:
- (1) It is widely agreed that Clement was familiar with 1 Corinthians and most probably also with Romans. Quite some strong evidence can also be cited for He brews, if he regarded it as a letter of Paul at all (Hagner, Use, 179–195; Gareth L. Cockerill, “Hebr 1,1–14, 1 Clem 36,1–6 and the High Priest Title,” JBL 97 (1978): 437–440; Michael Mees, “Die Hohepriester-Theologie des Hebräerbriefes im Vergleich mit dem Ersten Clemensbrief,” BZ 22 (1978): 115–124; Paul Ellingworth, “Hebrews and 1 Clement. Literary dependence or Common Tradition?” BZ 23 (1979): 262–269).
- (2) 1 Clement is full of allusions to and verbal parallels with passages from Paul’s letters, but it contains no citations.
- (3) Somewhat more difficult to handle are the many echoes, allusions or mere verbalparallels that lead one to think thatPaul’sletters are somehow in the author’s mind and that this is taken for granted also with regardtothe addressees, as will be shown with a couple of examples.
