Gindibu is the ‘First Arab’ in Historical Records (Kurkh Monolith). Where was Gindibu from?

  1. Answer: Syrian Desert. Source: Historian Israel Ephal, University of Jerusalem.
  2. “The Territory of the Arabs led by Gindibu was not under hegemony of Damascus. The distance from the (Qarqar) Battlefield reduces the likelihood that Gindibu came from North Arabia, and it seems more reasonable to put him in the Syrian Desert in the Vicinity of Wadi Sirhan”
  1. Camels were domesticated in the Levant in 900 BC. In 853 BC, we find the Earliest Historical attestation of ‘Arabs’ (Kurkh Monolith). Gindibu ‘King of the Arabs’ supplied 1000 camels at the Battle of Qarqar. Originally, the term ‘Arab’ was strongly associated with camel breeding.
